00:00:08.406 --> 00:00:13.570
Hello hockey skaters and goalies around the world, and welcome back to another edition of the ride to the rink.

00:00:13.570 --> 00:00:18.172
It's Lee with you today and we're talking about something that's coming to change for all of you.

00:00:18.172 --> 00:00:25.577
As many of you know, on August 1st 2024 no matter when you're listening to this this will still apply 1st 2024.

00:00:25.577 --> 00:00:27.338
No matter when you're listening to this, this will still apply.

00:00:27.338 --> 00:00:32.573
All hockey players, all youth hockey players, are being mandated to wear neck guards, and I've heard a lot of feedback from a lot of different people on this.

00:00:32.573 --> 00:00:33.598
A lot of people are accepting and understanding.

00:00:33.598 --> 00:00:47.779
Many of you have been wearing neck guards throughout your youth hockey journey, but every once in a while, I'll encounter someone that maybe hasn't done it, maybe is a little older, and this change is annoying to them, or it's affecting them, or I'll hear them say something I've never wore a neck guard before.

00:00:47.779 --> 00:00:57.847
It's going to get me off my game, and that's what I want to talk about today is larger changes that may or may not happen throughout your hockey career or life in general.

00:00:57.847 --> 00:01:02.682
That will be uncomfortable and I'm going to tell you a few things about being uncomfortable.

00:01:02.682 --> 00:01:05.484
You are not defined by the equipment.

00:01:05.484 --> 00:01:09.447
You wear the stick, you use the helmet, you have the gloves you have.

00:01:09.447 --> 00:01:11.590
That's not what makes you the hockey player.

00:01:11.590 --> 00:01:15.853
You are the equipment, while it does have some effect on how you play, doesn't make the player.

00:01:15.853 --> 00:01:18.055
You make the equipment.

00:01:18.055 --> 00:01:20.861
You make the stick great, you make the glove great.

00:01:20.861 --> 00:01:28.153
And what I have found in the top-level athletes while they do have their preferences, you can hand them any stick, any gloves, any Jersey, anything.

00:01:28.153 --> 00:01:31.308
They're going to be great with that or they're going to find a way to be great with that.

00:01:31.308 --> 00:01:47.230
And I want you to take the challenge not just with neck guards this season, but with any changes that may come to you unexpectedly to say, no matter what this is, no matter what's making me uncomfortable, I'm going to find a way through it and I'm going to become the best player I can be with that.

00:01:47.891 --> 00:01:50.775
Don't get caught up on things.

00:01:50.775 --> 00:01:53.144
They're going to get you off your game mentally.

00:01:53.144 --> 00:02:04.984
Your mind must be strong enough to break through that stuff and get you to a point where you can perform and execute in the game, in life, in school, no matter what.

00:02:04.984 --> 00:02:11.372
It's easy to say I don't have the things that I usually have and that's what's going to make things easier for me.

00:02:11.372 --> 00:02:15.469
Now again, I'm not saying you should go, look for situations that are uncomfortable.

00:02:15.469 --> 00:02:23.784
I'm saying that uncomfortable situations are naturally going to find you throughout the course of your hockey playing years, your school years and your life.

00:02:23.784 --> 00:02:30.209
It could be in the form of injury, broken stick we talked about at the beginning, or neck guards for everybody in the game.

00:02:30.819 --> 00:02:32.165
Commit to the neck guard.

00:02:32.165 --> 00:02:33.625
Connect to it as a team.

00:02:33.625 --> 00:02:37.531
Commit to facing the unknown as a group, as individuals.

00:02:37.531 --> 00:02:48.393
Commit that you can overcome the unexpected changes in your life Because at the end of the day, my friends, it is not what happens to you that makes you who you are.

00:02:48.393 --> 00:02:53.884
It's how you respond to what's happening to you that makes you who you are.

00:02:53.884 --> 00:03:00.225
It's how you get up and show everybody your character, your desire, your passion and what you want.

00:03:00.225 --> 00:03:04.967
When bad or good things happen to you, it's up to you to make that distinction.

00:03:05.407 --> 00:03:10.670
But once again I want to reiterate the equipment, the stick, does not make a great player.

00:03:10.670 --> 00:03:15.990
A great player makes the stick, makes the gloves, makes the jersey, makes the number.

00:03:15.990 --> 00:03:23.965
So if you're one of those people out there with a superstition and I'm not going to tell you not to have them I don't agree with them, but I'm not going to tell you not to have them.

00:03:23.965 --> 00:03:35.349
I am going to tell you, though do not allow that superstition to become a crutch for your output, for your play, for the type of person you are Be great all the time.

00:03:35.349 --> 00:03:37.313
Commit to that mentally.

00:03:37.313 --> 00:03:41.387
I'm going to be great all the time, no matter what I'm using, what I'm wearing.

00:03:41.387 --> 00:03:43.991
No one's going to stop me from giving my best effort.

00:03:43.991 --> 00:03:46.294
No one's going to stop me from putting it all out there.

00:03:46.294 --> 00:03:58.228
And hey look, if you have a different stick and it's not performing the way you want it to perform, as long as you've given everything you have, that is all you can do, and that's what I want you to focus on, what you control.

00:03:58.379 --> 00:04:06.252
So, again, whether it's the neck guard or something else, unexpected challenges are going to come across you in your life, in your hockey playing.

00:04:06.252 --> 00:04:20.009
In all of it, you have to be mentally strong enough to overcome those changes, to take them head on, to not ignore them and to make the best out of it, Because that's something you can do, and that is a skill that the highest level players have.

00:04:20.009 --> 00:04:22.709
That is a skill that highest level people have.

00:04:22.709 --> 00:04:24.545
You can start developing that now.

00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:33.271
Above all know this that I believe in you with those changes, and you should too, as you push forward on your hockey journey, on your school journey, on your life journey.

00:04:33.271 --> 00:04:34.680
It's all the same journey at the end of the day.

00:04:34.680 --> 00:04:35.702
But that's it, my friends.

00:04:35.702 --> 00:04:42.759
Find those challenges, take them on, get good at taking on those challenges, because it's practice for everything coming towards you in the future.

00:04:42.759 --> 00:04:46.130
But remember to be present right now and enjoy every second of everything that you're doing.

00:04:46.130 --> 00:04:47.262
Remember I believe in you.

00:04:47.262 --> 00:04:48.348
Once again, you should too.

00:04:48.348 --> 00:04:50.365
We'll see you on the next Ride to the Rink.

00:04:50.365 --> 00:04:51.247
Take care everybody.

00:04:51.247 --> 00:04:51.869
Have fun out there.

00:04:51.869 --> 00:04:52.790
Remember, skate on.
