The Ride to The Rink: Maximizing Fun and Growth in Summer and Spring League Hockey

In this episode of The Ride to The Rink Mike and Lee dive into the joys and opportunities of summer and spring league hockey. With the summer heat in full swing, it’s time to embrace the fun and freedom these leagues offer, while still focusing on personal growth and development.

In this episode, we discuss:

•The unique, relaxed atmosphere of summer and spring league hockey, with no practices and just one game a week.
•Encouraging kids to try different positions and roles on the ice to develop new skills and perspectives.
•The importance of maintaining good habits and sportsmanship, even in a less formal league setting.
•The value of playing multiple sports during the off-season to give the mind and body a break from hockey.
•How to balance having fun with staying competitive and focused on personal improvement.
•Engaging with new teammates and experiencing different playing styles to become a more well-rounded player.

Mike and Lee also stress the importance of making the most out of these less structured leagues. They remind players to keep their behavior in check and always be mindful of their conduct on and off the ice.

Tune in to discover how to make the most of your summer and spring league hockey experience, and remember, it’s all about having fun and growing as a player and person.

00:00:08.230 --> 00:00:12.660
hello, hockey skaters and goalies around the world and welcome back to another edition of the ride to the rink.

00:00:12.660 --> 00:00:14.064
It is summertime, mike.

00:00:14.064 --> 00:00:15.268
It's summer, it's hot outside.

00:00:15.268 --> 00:00:18.464
Where I'm at, I'm sweating when I go outside not my favorite thing to do, hopefully.

00:00:18.464 --> 00:00:21.481
You kids out there are playing multiple sports this time of year.

00:00:21.481 --> 00:00:25.588
You're in the baseball, you're in soccer, you're in the lacrosse, whatever you like to do.

00:00:25.669 --> 00:00:42.524
But some of you, many of you, if you're listening to this show, most likely play summer league hockey or spring league hockey, depending on when you're listening to this, and we wanted to do a quick ride to the rink about how to enjoy summer league and spring league, because most summer and spring leagues, mike, do not have practices.

00:00:42.524 --> 00:00:43.784
It's one game a week.

00:00:43.784 --> 00:00:44.786
It's real loose.

00:00:44.786 --> 00:00:46.807
You typically have a fun Jersey on.

00:00:46.807 --> 00:00:55.776
It might be an outside highlighter to color, it might be something cool that you put together, but in my opinion and kids listen summer and spring hockey should be a blast.

00:00:55.776 --> 00:00:57.036
It should be fun.

00:01:01.759 --> 00:01:11.783
This is your time to go out there without the fear of a league or a title or anything, and just enjoy yourself, hopefully with your friends, and then work freely on things that you want to get better at, no matter what position you you play, it's not about doing stuff crazy on the ice.

00:01:11.783 --> 00:01:13.167
It's going to put your team in a bad spot.

00:01:13.167 --> 00:01:19.218
But this is that low pressure league time of the season where you can just go out there and enjoy the game.

00:01:19.218 --> 00:01:20.522
You should be enjoying it year round.

00:01:20.522 --> 00:01:23.010
You should be, but again, no practices.

00:01:23.010 --> 00:01:24.515
One game a week, mike.

00:01:24.715 --> 00:01:33.585
I think summer league is just a party in the summer when it comes to hockey yeah, and it's not so much about you know, putting your teammates in in your team in a bad place.

00:01:33.585 --> 00:01:38.144
It's about your ability to try different things and have the freedom to try those things.

00:01:38.144 --> 00:01:45.411
Most of us don't get that during a season because we're, you know, worrying about what what the score is at any given time.

00:01:45.760 --> 00:01:47.365
Hopefully in the spring in the summer league.

00:01:47.647 --> 00:01:48.569
You know we're not worrying about that.

00:01:48.569 --> 00:01:49.665
It depends on what level you're at.

00:01:49.665 --> 00:02:02.691
If you're playing in a really cool three-on-three cross-ice league as an eight-year-old or you're playing in a high school, you know summer league as a high school player, you know.

00:02:02.691 --> 00:02:08.377
Just, you know I've had so many youth players in spring league because they're dying for goaltenders, have tried goaltender.

00:02:08.377 --> 00:02:11.590
I'm like, okay, I'll never do that again, but try it.

00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:14.066
And you're born into a goalie or you become a goalie.

00:02:14.066 --> 00:02:15.049
That's what happened to my son.

00:02:15.890 --> 00:02:16.211
Yeah, yeah.

00:02:16.211 --> 00:02:19.123
Or you say, oh, wow, I'm really actually good at this, so I'm going to try it.

00:02:19.123 --> 00:02:42.646
Just a matter of using this time and this little, this little window of opportunity to still, you know, develop your skills, uh, develop your love for playing, have some fun, try different things, and but don't stress out about, right, uh, making a bad play or or not making the right play, but on the same, at the same, uh, thought process.

00:02:42.646 --> 00:02:50.840
Make sure you just don't get into really bad habits, right, and don't get into play, don't get into things where it's not realistic, depending on the level you're playing in.

00:02:50.840 --> 00:03:01.566
Listen, if you, if you're fortunate to get to play, like spring or summer league hockey with a bunch of friends you normally wouldn't get to play with because maybe you're at a higher level than him, this is the time where you should have 40 assists in the game, right?

00:03:01.566 --> 00:03:06.093
This is a time when you can now dictate the ice and influence the play.

00:03:06.093 --> 00:03:07.586
Use that to your advantage.

00:03:07.961 --> 00:03:30.009
And I think, just in closing, on my end, I would just say you know, if you're in those environments too, remember anytime you're an athlete and anytime you're in, especially hockey rinks, because they're not, they're far and few between right, there's a lot less hockey rinks than basketball courts and tennis courts, and, and, and, big of all courts, and, and, and you know baseball diamonds.

00:03:30.841 --> 00:03:39.572
Think about how you conduct yourself, think about how you're acting, think about what you're saying to officials and other parents and coaches.

00:03:39.572 --> 00:03:47.060
Don't allow this to be the free for all of spring and summer of losing the fact of who you are as a player.

00:03:47.060 --> 00:03:59.485
And I see it like players in the spring and the summer lose perspective that they're still being looked at and and evaluated and talked about.

00:03:59.485 --> 00:04:08.504
And you don't want to leave the rink after getting kicked out of a spring league game Cause you thought it was meaningless, but somebody else didn't think it was meaningless about the way you acted.

00:04:08.504 --> 00:04:09.507
So just be okay.

00:04:09.507 --> 00:04:17.565
Be be very aware of that that we let let our guard down because it is spring and summer, but don't let your guard down so much to make yourself look bad.

00:04:17.786 --> 00:04:26.694
Yeah, mike, I think these are great points and, like I said, when I say it's a party, I mean a party for you to amplify the things that you do well and work on the things maybe you don't do well.

00:04:26.694 --> 00:04:30.185
This isn't the time to try 15 Michigans a game right.

00:04:30.185 --> 00:04:32.824
It might be time to try one if it presents itself okay.

00:04:32.824 --> 00:04:36.880
Right, it might be time to try one if it presents itself okay, to be fair, if you want to have fun with that.

00:04:36.880 --> 00:04:37.702
But it's not time to to try 15.

00:04:37.702 --> 00:04:39.105
It's not try to time to do something crazy.

00:04:39.427 --> 00:04:44.257
Listen, I've maintained and players listen to me, I've maintained this for years you want to be a great forward, play defense.

00:04:44.257 --> 00:04:45.742
You want to be great defense, play forward.

00:04:45.742 --> 00:04:52.141
This is a great opportunity for you to try other positions, as mike said, to learn some perspective on that also.

00:04:52.141 --> 00:04:53.244
Mike, we didn't talk about this.

00:04:53.244 --> 00:05:02.862
I know a young man who plays spring and summer league at a different rink with different kids so he can interact with different hockey players, and I think that that's a really great thing that he does.

00:05:02.862 --> 00:05:03.182
Right.

00:05:03.182 --> 00:05:05.942
You meet new people, you meet new types of players.

00:05:05.942 --> 00:05:07.341
You have to learn how to deal with that.

00:05:07.341 --> 00:05:14.166
That experience in those environments right help make you more well-rounded, not just as a hockey player, but as a person.

00:05:14.166 --> 00:05:21.252
But I do want to close this with saying before before I'm going to throw it back to you too that make sure you consider playing other sports as well.

00:05:21.252 --> 00:05:26.776
As much as I love playing summer and spring hockey, you should also be looking forward to some of those other spring and summer sports.

00:05:26.776 --> 00:05:29.360
They're very important for your development.

00:05:29.380 --> 00:05:32.906
Playing hockey year round nonstop is not awesome.

00:05:32.906 --> 00:05:34.629
It's not awesome for you, right?

00:05:34.629 --> 00:05:35.800
You got to take the mental break.

00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:38.562
You got to take the physical change and look at other things.

00:05:38.562 --> 00:05:39.446
Mike, you had something else?

00:05:40.334 --> 00:05:43.331
Yeah, unless of course it's roller hockey or floorball or street hockey.

00:05:43.331 --> 00:05:43.975
That's a different sport.

00:05:43.975 --> 00:05:48.367
But yeah, but listen, it's hard to do that when you're a kid.

00:05:48.367 --> 00:05:50.997
It's hard for a parent to go.

00:05:50.997 --> 00:05:56.701
Oh my God, if they miss these three weekends in a row, they're not going to advance, it's you know.

00:05:56.701 --> 00:06:01.386
If you're a good hockey player, you're going to be a good hockey player in August, just like you were in April.

00:06:01.386 --> 00:06:04.468
And I think just take the time to refresh, you know.

00:06:04.468 --> 00:06:05.928
Get yourself in a different mindset.

00:06:05.928 --> 00:06:08.451
Let your body rest Right.

00:06:08.451 --> 00:06:09.572
Go with some tennis balls.

00:06:15.654 --> 00:06:18.723
Go with some golf balls, go play a little pick a ball, go play catch, go play, go swimming, go play anything, go do something and find.

00:06:18.723 --> 00:06:26.461
Find a bunch of other kids in your, in your neighborhood and, if you're lucky, you're going to find, you know, a lot of lifelong friends that love coming to watch you play hockey during the winter.

00:06:27.055 --> 00:06:30.576
Yeah, no, I think that that's true, Mike, and it's fantastic advice.

00:06:30.576 --> 00:06:34.701
Well, that is going to do it for this edition of the Ride to the Rink about summer and spring.

00:06:34.701 --> 00:06:35.942
Remember, kids, we believe in you.

00:06:35.942 --> 00:06:40.427
We're doing these little mini shows because we believe in you and we can't thank you enough for listening.
