The Ride To The Rink - Shoot With A Purpose

Ever wondered why elite NHL players almost never miss the net during warm-ups? Its because elite level players players always shoot with a purpose. They know exactly where they want to put the puck each and every time they shoot. In this week's episode of the Ride To The Rink, we highlight the importance of adopting a calculated approach to how you shoot.

Lee mentions that shooting aimlessly is a waste of a shot and shares practical advice on shot selection, placement, and more. We also discuss why this purposeful mindset should not be limited to shooting but should be extended to other aspects of hockey, such as passing and defensive play.

00:00:08.013 --> 00:00:19.800
Hello hockey skaters and goalies around the world and welcome to another edition of the ride to the rank, the show that we've made for you, the players, to give you some advice from us as coaches, from us as parents and us as hockey people to help you along or away.

00:00:19.800 --> 00:00:39.435
Today's message is kind of for both players and goalies, but I'm specifically talking about players and something you need to learn to do, and I've something I've noticed especially if you are a might or a squirt or even a pee, we and it is shooting with a purpose goalies you'll love this because you're going to get a lot more shots on net that matter.

00:00:39.435 --> 00:00:46.244
I've seen it too many times that you come into the net and we just kind of flick the puck or we throw the puck kind of mindlessly.

00:00:46.244 --> 00:00:47.569
Let me tell you something, a story.

00:00:47.569 --> 00:01:08.953
I was very fortunate to work at the NHL and for an NHL team for several years, so I got to see a ton of NHL games but, more importantly, a ton of practices and NHL warm-ups and something I noticed really early on when watching NHL warm-ups and a lot of you ever been to an NHL game have seen this players don't miss the net a lot when they're warming up.

00:01:08.953 --> 00:01:18.034
In fact, if they do, they get kind of disappointed, and it's because NHL players, top level players, always shoot with a purpose.

00:01:18.034 --> 00:01:23.224
They know where they want to put the puck, how they want to put the puck there, what the shot selection is.

00:01:23.224 --> 00:01:27.963
If there's a goalie in net, they are thinking about where they want to place the puck.

00:01:27.963 --> 00:01:37.090
Every shot is done with a purpose and I don't think that that's something that you need to wait until you're older to do so.

00:01:37.090 --> 00:01:52.643
Whether you have a great shot or not, the ability to mentally come in and say I want to put this top right, bottom right, bottom left with a wrist shot, snap shot, slap shot, toe drag, release, whatever it is do it with a purpose.

00:01:52.643 --> 00:01:55.635
Now I'll tell you this as well for goaltenders and warm-ups.

00:01:55.635 --> 00:02:08.562
Goalies want to feel the puck in the warm-up, and when you come in and just make a deek to make a deek and they're ready for a shot, you're both wasting precious time and precious abilities to warm yourselves up.

00:02:08.562 --> 00:02:17.070
When you come in on a goalie in a warm-up, pick a corner and, with great intention, shoot the puck there, your goalie will appreciate this.

00:02:17.070 --> 00:02:18.983
This is assuming that they're already somewhat warmed up.

00:02:18.983 --> 00:02:21.129
First few shots you should put in their pads anyway.

00:02:21.129 --> 00:02:31.570
But again, the message kids anytime you are putting a puck towards the net, shoot with a purpose, mentally and physically.

00:02:31.570 --> 00:02:38.653
And you can expand this to other aspects of the game, like passing dumps up the boards when you're breaking out defensively.

00:02:38.653 --> 00:02:40.719
Do it with a purpose.

00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:46.221
But I think the easy one to understand, the easy one for you to start with, is shoot with a purpose.

00:02:46.221 --> 00:02:48.366
Do not just throw it at the net.

00:02:48.366 --> 00:02:51.802
That is going to do it with this edition of the ride to the rink.

00:02:51.802 --> 00:02:54.917
I want you shooting with purpose today when you're on the ice.

00:02:54.917 --> 00:02:56.062
Be that player.

00:02:56.062 --> 00:02:57.831
It's going to help your whole team.

00:02:57.831 --> 00:02:58.354
That's going to do it.

00:02:58.354 --> 00:02:58.556
Again.

00:02:58.556 --> 00:02:59.139
I'm Leo I's.

00:02:59.139 --> 00:03:00.443
Thanks so much for listening to the ride of the rink.

00:03:00.443 --> 00:03:01.306
We'll see you in the next one.

00:03:01.306 --> 00:03:03.823
Have a great day and skate on everybody.
