00:00:07.993 --> 00:00:12.105
Hello hockey skaters and goalies around the world, and welcome to another edition of the ride to the rank.

00:00:12.105 --> 00:00:14.971
This is Lee Elias today, and I've got two questions.

00:00:14.971 --> 00:00:29.228
I want to teach you that you should constantly be asking yourself really in every situation in your life but I think this really plays into your hockey career as well that I learned a little later in my life, that I've applied and I really wish I knew these when I was a youth hockey player.

00:00:29.228 --> 00:00:34.808
And those two questions are this number one what do I control in this situation?

00:00:34.808 --> 00:00:42.682
Now, you can use this at any point of a game, whether you're very excited, whether it's a tie game, whether you're losing, you're feeling a little bit of despair.

00:00:42.682 --> 00:01:02.170
It is so important that you identify what it is that you control in those situations, because most of the time and adults do this too we end up focusing on the things we can't control the score, what the other teammates are doing, what the other team is doing right, what this means for the standings, what this means for the playoffs.

00:01:02.170 --> 00:01:04.906
None of those are directly within your control.

00:01:04.906 --> 00:01:06.570
Obviously, you influence them through your play.

00:01:06.570 --> 00:01:07.984
What do you control?

00:01:07.984 --> 00:01:13.250
You control your mindset, you control your effort, you control what you put in your body, whether that's food or knowledge.

00:01:13.250 --> 00:01:15.260
Those are the things you have control over.

00:01:15.260 --> 00:01:24.427
So constantly asking yourself what do I have control over will help you focus on the things that you need to be in control of to succeed now.

00:01:24.427 --> 00:01:26.692
The other question is about being present.

00:01:26.692 --> 00:01:28.227
Are you in the present moment?

00:01:28.227 --> 00:01:34.459
And I always give this example all of you have been reading a book and you read two or three pages and you realize I didn't read any of that.

00:01:34.459 --> 00:01:35.484
I didn't retain any of that.

00:01:35.484 --> 00:01:36.733
It's because your mind wandered.

00:01:36.733 --> 00:01:52.813
And I want to tell you right now, your mind is wired to wander, so it's another thing to practice is to bring yourself back to the present moment, the right now, the right here, and that's where you combine the two questions together what do I control in this moment?

00:01:52.813 --> 00:01:54.156
What do I control right now?

00:01:54.156 --> 00:01:57.730
So don't get lost on your previous shift or shifts.

00:01:57.730 --> 00:02:01.326
Don't get lost on your next shift or what's going to happen two periods from now.

00:02:01.326 --> 00:02:14.222
Focus about right now, what's in front of you, what can I do in the next moment, this moment right now, to have an impact for my team or have an impact on my life, or have an impact in the way that we are going to move forward as a team.

00:02:14.222 --> 00:02:19.802
So those are the two questions what do I control in this situation and what am I being present right now?

00:02:19.802 --> 00:02:21.187
Ask yourself those questions.

00:02:21.187 --> 00:02:26.336
You'll find a lot of success again, not limited to hockey, but you can use it in hockey in these situations.

00:02:26.336 --> 00:02:31.842
This has been Lee with another ride to the ring, when I wish you the best this weekend, or wherever you're at, in your hockey journey.

00:02:31.842 --> 00:02:33.063
Skate on.
