The Ride To The Rink - Unraveling the Unseen Mental Battles in Hockey with Justin Goldman Of The Goalie Guild

 Justin Goldman of the Goalie Guild discusses with us about the mental struggles that players grapple with this week on The Ride To The Rink. He shares valuable insights into the importance of acknowledging and managing emotions like disappointment, fear, and anxiety – emotions that every player, amateur or pro, has felt at some point.

No one should feel alone in their emotional journey, and Justin stresses the critical importance of reaching out, sharing, and discussing these feelings. He believes that such dialogues can help identify, label, and thereby manage the emotions that can impact a player's performance on and off the ice.

00:00:08.053 --> 00:00:19.623
Justin, let me ask you this Is there a phrase or a thought that you think hockey players especially those listening should know, when it comes to playing the game especially the mental side of the game to make themselves feel better?

00:00:21.202 --> 00:00:26.812
Yeah, I think traditionally we hear this phrase it's okay to not be okay.

00:00:26.812 --> 00:00:32.109
But I personally like the phrase it's okay to feel whatever you're feeling.

00:00:32.109 --> 00:00:52.509
And the reason why I think that's so important is because, you know, goalies face a lot of different challenges on a daily basis, not only on the ice but within their own mind, and it can be extremely challenging to process those thoughts in a way that's productive and, at the end of the day, makes you still feel good about yourself.

00:00:52.509 --> 00:01:12.715
So, whatever it is that you're feeling, if it's disappointment or it's fear or it's anxiety, you know these are all feelings that every goalie in the history of the game has felt at some point in time, Whether you're Pecorine or you're just a junior goalie trying to find your way.

00:01:12.715 --> 00:01:15.727
These feelings are very normal and they're very common.

00:01:15.727 --> 00:01:27.087
So it's okay to feel whatever you're feeling and if, at any point in time, you feel like you want to talk to someone about that, there's always someone that's ready to listen.

00:01:27.087 --> 00:01:37.864
There's always someone that will be able to resonate with you and find that common ground and help you understand that you're not alone and that these things are normal and that you can improve upon them.

00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:45.469
And I think also, man, an important part of those conversations that you're alluding to is that it helps you to identify what you may be feeling.

00:01:45.469 --> 00:01:59.558
You don't always know what you're feeling, but if you're able to label it okay, I'm angry, I'm anxious, I'm uncomfortable you will help yourself learn to control those emotions so they don't control you 100%.

00:02:01.605 --> 00:02:02.347
Very well said.

00:02:02.347 --> 00:02:03.820
I'll take that.
