The Ride To The Rink - Why Every Young Player Should Watch the Rivalry Series
Have you checked out the Rivalry Series yet?
In this episode of The Ride To The Rink, Sheri and Lee dive into the growing excitement around women’s hockey and the impact of watching Team USA and Canada face off in their annual Rivalry Series.
They explore how USA Hockey is building the sport’s fanbase through outreach events like “try hockey for free” sessions and meet-and-greets with Olympians, making hockey more accessible and inspiring the next generation of fans.
With the latest Rivalry Series game held at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City, this nearly 40-year-old USA-Canada rivalry is now one of the oldest in hockey, even surpassing some men’s rivalries.

Speaker A [0:08 - 0:30]: Hello, hockey skaters and goalies around the world. Welcome back to another edition of the Ride to the Rink. It's Lee and Sherry with you today. And I'm really excited here because Sherry has been in Utah. She was at the rivalry series between USA and Canada. And I've got to ask her, she's telling me as much as you today, kids. Sherry, what was the rivalry series like? Why is it awesome? Why does every kid and family listen to this program? Program have to check it out. Tell us about the experience.
Speaker B [0:31 - 1:36]: Yeah, thanks, Lee. We just got back from the rivalry series. Incredible game at the Maverick center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Really nice to have them out here in the west. It was great. We took, we got 50 tickets. We brought all our kids and our families, siblings, brothers, grandparents, everything to the game just to try to pack barn and for our girls to cheer on. USA Hockey, incredible game. It was five to four, went to a shootout. There's three on three, overtime. Like it could not have been, you know, a better game. It was really, really exciting. What I love most about the rivalry series is how physical it is. Like a long time, literally a rivalry, really, really physical game. And I think, you know, our parents that have not seen women's hockey before all commented on how physical the game was, which is really cool. And then very high scoring game 5 to 4. So a lot of back and forth excitement and then. Yeah, if you haven't seen a U.S. canada rivalry series, you need to go check it out because it's fast, it's physical, a lot of finesse in that game and it's just very heated and you have to go see it. I can't stress that enough, you know.
Speaker A [1:36 - 2:18]: Sure, you're making a good point about the rivalry aspect. I was just thinking this too, that the USA Canada women's rivalry is actually becoming one of the oldest rivalries in hockey. Because when you think about it, even in men's hockey, it hasn't always been Canada, usa. At one point it was like Soviets, Canada. Obviously this is the 1980 team. But, but USA Canada, women's. I mean, it's like a 40 year old rivalry. Now I'm thinking about it just keeps growing and growing and growing, which is amazing. Now I also want to say this too. The game is awesome, but there's a lot of events surrounding the game. Right. Where people can experience hockey. And we all know, you know, Utah is a really fast growing hockey market. Have you seen any of that with the kids able to experience any of that?
Speaker B [2:18 - 2:55]: Yeah. So when USA Hockey comes to Any city, they do activations, you know, with the host teams that are in market like local, even local youth hockey associ. They typically do try hockey for Freeze, which is really good and they'll have the Olympians come out on the ice. They do a lot of really nice activations where the girls can come and meet players and then. Yeah, I'm not sure about Hockey Canada, but I believe like every city that they're in, they try to just have some touch points with the team players and local girls in the. In the market. So, yeah, both Hockey Canada and USA Hockey. USA Hockey do a very good job of making sure that they are impactful in the markets that they are in.
Speaker A [2:55 - 3:35]: Yeah, it's a group effort and it's so cool to see that after the games that are so heated and unbelievably there's a lot of fire in those games and then to see the. The larger understanding of we have to grow the game across the board is. Is always really amazing. So, dude, I love hearing about this. That's so cool that you got to go. We got to remind the audience if you ever get a chance to see the rivalry series USA Canada, it is 100 something you should go do. A lot of the guests we've had on our girls play hockey have either been Olympians from both teams. We've had obviously GMs from one of the teams, so we're big fans of that here. Sherry, I'm really excited that you got to spend some time enjoying the game and enjoying the hockey, so thanks for sharing that with us.
Speaker B [3:36 - 3:37]: Yep, thanks for having me, Lee.
Speaker A [3:37 - 3:48]: All right, that's going to do it for this edition of the Ride to Ring. Kids, find these games, watch them on tv. Enjoy hockey however you can. Remember to believe in yourselves, because we believe in you. And above all, skate on. We'll see you on the next ride of the Ring. Take care.
